Step-by-step instructions to upload a Safety Data Sheet or exemption sheet.
What is a Safety Data Sheet?
A Safety Data Sheet (or SDS, previously known as a Material Safety Data Sheet) is a document used to communicate the hazards of chemicals found in products. Household cleaning products, nail polish removers, and spray lubricants are some examples of products that require an SDS.
It contains 16 sections and describes a product’s physical and chemical properties, physical and health hazards, routes of exposure, precautions for safe handling and use, emergency and first-aid procedures, and control measures.
When to submit a Safety Data Sheet?
If an exemption sheet is not sufficient or rejected, Amazon will ask you to submit an SDS for any product considered a dangerous goods or hazmat product by Amazon.
Where do you get a Safety Data Sheet?
The product manufacturer, supplier, or SDS-authoring service provides SDS documents.
What is an exemption sheet?
An exemption sheet helps classify the product as non-dangerous goods if the product or any of its components do not contain batteries or any flammable or hazardous substances.
When to submit an exemption sheet?
Batteries: If a product is a battery or contains a battery, you can provide battery details in the exemption sheet, and Amazon will classify the item as dangerous goods. This allows you to sell the item in most cases.
Harmful chemicals: Similarly, if the product contains any harmful chemical or flammable substance, such as alcohol, Amazon will accept an exemption sheet and classify the item as dangerous goods, allowing you to sell the item in most cases.
If an exemption sheet is not sufficient or rejected, Amazon may ask you to submit an SDS for the product.
If a product is already regulated as dangerous goods (i.e., contains harmful materials), you must provide Amazon with specific product information and documentation in the form of an SDS.
Products that require only an exemption sheet:
An exemption sheet is acceptable for products that don’t need an SDS. This applies to two categories:
Battery and battery-powered products
Products without harmful chemicals
Where do you get an exemption sheet?
You can download the exemption sheet from Amazon Seller Central. This exemption sheet will be accepted for up to 10 ASINs at a time. If you need to provide information for more than 10 ASINs, submit a new template.
