Amazon's Extended Holiday Return Window Now Applies Every Year – October 16, 2026

Amazon has made its extended holiday return window a permanent, yearly policy for Amazon.com. For 2026, anything a customer buys between November 1 and December 31 can be returned until January 31, 2027. The rule applies automatically to every US seller, whether you ship through FBA or fulfill orders yourself.

According to the official Amazon announcement posted on Seller Forums, the extension exists to improve the shopping experience and drive customer traffic during year-end shopping. The key line is short: "This policy will apply every year." Amazon also says no action is needed from sellers and that existing return and refund conditions stay the same.

What exactly is changing?

  • Purchase window: Items bought on Amazon.com from November 1 to December 31, 2026 qualify for the extended return period.

  • Return deadline: Customers can send those items back until January 31, 2027, well past the standard 30-day window.

  • Apple exception: Apple-brand products bought in the same period have an earlier cutoff of January 15, 2027.

  • Who it covers: All items sold on Amazon.com, both FBA and FBM. Sellers cannot opt out.

  • What is new: Amazon ran the same extension last year. The difference now is that Amazon has confirmed it will repeat every holiday season, so it is no longer a one-off decision.

Why does this matter for sellers?

Your Q4 sales are not final when December ends. A gift bought on November 5 can come back on January 30, close to three months later. That means early January profit reports, ad spend decisions and reorder quantities can all be built on numbers that will still shrink.

The permanent part is what changes planning. Until now, Amazon announced the extension one season at a time and called it temporary. Now you can treat the late January deadline as a fixed part of the calendar and budget for it every year. FBM sellers feel this most, since they handle the returns themselves and need their return addresses, labels and refund process ready for a longer tail of holiday returns.

What should sellers do now?

  • Hold back a returns reserve: Use your own historical refund rate for November and December orders and set that cash aside until February.

  • Track the holiday cohort: Tag orders placed between November 1 and December 31 and watch their return rate through January 31 instead of closing the books on December 31.

  • Plan reorders on net sales: Base Q1 inventory on sales after expected returns, not on gross holiday units.

  • Get FBM returns ready: Confirm return addresses, label settings and refund workflows before November 1.

  • Audit FBA returns: Check that every customer return is either received back into stock or reimbursed, especially for late returns that arrive in February.

eStore Factory Tip: A longer return window means more returns to audit, and more chances for refunded units that never make it back to your inventory. Our Amazon FBA reimbursement service tracks those cases and files claims for you, and Refunzo can help you recover money lost to returns and SAFE-T claims after the holiday rush.
